Pompeii does not explain itself. Without a guide you see walls; with one you see a bakery, an election notice, a brothel. Which tour fits – and what it has to include since 2024.

There are three kinds, and the difference is not the guide but the logistics. A tour at the gate is two hours with an archaeologist and nothing else. A tour from Naples or Sorrento adds the transfer. A tour from Rome is a twelve-hour day with three hours on site. All of them must include one thing since November 2024: a ticket with your name on it.
You get yourself to the Porta Marina entrance – the Circumvesuviana stops right there – and meet the guide. Two hours cover the Forum, the baths, a bakery, the brothel, the plaster casts. Ticket included, names collected at booking. The cheapest way to be told what you are looking at.
Pick-up or a meeting point in town, bus or train to Pompeii, two hours with a guide, back by early afternoon. €47 to €68. Worth it if you do not want to work out the Circumvesuviana – which is easy, but crowded and not known for its comfort.
Twelve to thirteen hours door to door, of which about three are in Pompeii, often combined with Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast or Vesuvius. €69 to €109. It works, but it is a lot of coach for three hours of ruins – the high-speed train to Naples and a half-day tour from there is the alternative.
The classic. You meet at Porta Marina, the ticket is in the price, the group is usually small. Two hours is enough for the highlights; if you want the Villa of the Mysteries as well, check whether the tour includes the Pompeii+ ticket – the Express ticket does not cover it.

Naples is 35 to 40 minutes away by Circumvesuviana, so the transfer is the smallest part of these tours. What you buy is not having to think about it: a meeting point in the city, a guide who has the tickets, a bus back.

From Sorrento the Circumvesuviana takes about half an hour, and several tours simply use it – cheaper and faster than a coach. From Rome it is a full day: high-speed train or coach to Naples, then onward. Tours from Rome that add the Amalfi Coast spend more time on the road than in Pompeii; that is fine if you know it.

The rules changed in November 2024 and again in January 2026. A tour that was fine two years ago can now leave you at the gate.
Every Pompeii ticket carries the visitor's name. A serious tour asks for the names of everyone in your party when you book, or shortly after. If a tour says nothing about names and tickets, ask before you pay. Bring photo ID; the park reserves the right to check.
From March 16 to October 14 there are two allocations: 15,000 admissions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., only 5,000 from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Morning tours have three times the room. "Skip the line" means a reserved ticket, not a way around the daily cap of 20,000 – when it is full, it is full, for tours too.
Pompeii Express (€20) covers the city. The Villa of the Mysteries needs Pompeii+ (€25) or the €8 add-on. Most two-hour tours run on the Express ticket and never reach the villa – which is fine, it is outside the city walls and a walk from the Forum, but do not expect it unless the tour says so.
No. Guides are not mandatory, the ticket is €20, and the train from Naples stops at the gate. The question is what you want out of two hours in a city with no signs worth reading.
Buy the ticket at pompeii.vivaticket.it with your names, take the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, walk in at Porta Marina. Allow at least half a day for the main axes; the park's map is decent. You set the pace, you can stay until closing, and you save €12 to €30 per person. What you lose: the bakery is a room with ovens, the election notice is a scratch on a wall, until someone tells you.
Two hours that turn ruins into a city. The good archaeologists are worth every euro; the bad ones herd 25 people past the casts. Small-group tours and those with a stated maximum are the safer bet. A tour also solves the two things people get wrong: the names on the ticket and the time slot. After the tour you can stay on the site with the same ticket – ask the guide to point you toward the amphitheater and the Villa of the Mysteries.

For most people, yes – for the first two hours. Pompeii has almost no explanatory signs, and the things that make it a city rather than a ruin are invisible without context. After the tour, stay on with the same ticket and walk the rest on your own.
The ones listed here do. Since November 2024 the ticket carries your name, so the operator will ask for the names of your party. A tour that does not mention tickets or names is worth a question before booking.
Guided walks are 1.5 to 2 hours. Half-day tours from Naples or Sorrento take 3 to 4 hours door to door; full days from Rome 9 to 13 hours, with about three hours in Pompeii.
Morning, right at 9 a.m., before the coach groups arrive and while the morning allocation of 15,000 is open. In summer, afternoons after 3 p.m. are quieter but hotter, and the afternoon allocation is only 5,000. March to May and October are the best months; July and August are hard because of heat and no shade.
Sometimes. Operators hold their own allocations, and when the online sale for a date is gone, a tour is often the last way in. But the daily cap of 20,000 applies to everyone; no tour can add places once the park has closed the day.
