From Seattle it is a white dome above the high-rises.

The park is open around the clock all year, and in 2026 you need no timed entry reservation – there was one in 2024 and 2025. The pressure is elsewhere: in the northwest a bridge has been gone since April 2025, and in the northeast a wildfire cut the road to Sunrise. The volcano itself is listed by the USGS at NORMAL / GREEN.
Valid seven days, children under 16 free. In 2026 no part of the park requires a time slot; the park manages crowding through parking instead. Entrance stations are cashless – card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay only.
The Nisqually entrance at Ashford is the only one open to cars year round. From there it is about a 45-minute drive to Paradise: visitor center, wildflower meadows, the Skyline Trail and a direct view of the glaciers.
Normally the highest point in the park you can drive to. In 2026 the road up to Sunrise is closed to vehicles; it is open to walkers and cyclists from the White River Road. The visitor center and day lodge are shut because of fire damage, and there is no drinking water up there. The White River Road itself has been open again since 5 September 2026.
The Fairfax Bridge of 1921 on SR 165 was permanently closed on 22 April 2025: advancing corrosion and a buckling support pier. There is no detour, and a replacement is neither approved nor funded. The entire northwest of the park is therefore unreachable by car.

From Seattle it is about two to two and a half hours to Paradise, from Tacoma an hour and a half to two. No public transportation runs into the park, so it comes down to a rental car or a guided day tour.
The drive is half the story. Past Ashford the road runs through old-growth forest, past Longmire and waterfalls right at the roadside, then climbs in switchbacks. The mountain keeps disappearing behind the trees – and then stands there in full width for the last few miles.
Up at Paradise it is usually ten degrees cooler than in Seattle, windy and often wet. The meadows bloom from late July to mid-August; before that, old snow still covers the high trails, and after it come fall color and clearer air. The Skyline Trail climbs about 1,600 ft (500 m) and takes half a day; 30 minutes is enough for the view of the Nisqually Glacier.
What you will not see: lava, smoke, glowing rock. Mount Rainier is active but quiet. What you may well not see either is the summit – statistically it is in cloud more often than clear. If you want it, plan two attempts.

Three years, three different rules – which is why so much of what you read online is wrong. For 2026: just drive up, pay at the gate by card, and get there early.

Eleven U.S. national parks charge visitors without U.S. residency a $100 surcharge. Mount Rainier is not one of them; here it stays at $30 per vehicle. Yellowstone, for example, is on the list.
There is no ticket with a time on it and nothing that can sell out. You can buy the entrance pass ahead on recreation.gov if you like – it is not required.
The entrance stations take no cash. Card or phone is enough; if you only carry bills, buy the pass beforehand at a store in Ashford, Packwood or Enumclaw.
With the time slots gone, parking is the bottleneck. On summer weekends Paradise and the White River Road fill up by late morning. The park recommends arriving before 10 a.m. or after 2:30 p.m.

The summit is not a hike. From Paradise it is more than 9,000 ft (2,700 m) of climbing across crevassed glaciers, normally with a night at Camp Muir or Camp Schurman. The park expects rope-team skills and glacier experience.
Who this is not for: anyone who has never walked a glacier on a rope, anyone who cannot move on crampons, and anyone planning it as a day trip. If you just want to see the mountain, Paradise gets you close to it far more cheaply and far more safely.
Required of anyone stepping onto a glacier or climbing above about 10,000 ft (3,000 m) – year round, per person. You pay in advance through Pay.gov and register in person at a wilderness information station within 24 hours of your climb.
Required for every night in the backcountry, with capacity limits from 1 May to 15 September through Recreation.gov. The park keeps about half of each high camp open for walk-ups; Friday nights and weekends go first.

No mountain in the contiguous United States carries this much glacial ice. Underneath it lies rock that hot water has turned to clay over thousands of years. Ice and soft rock together make a lahar: a mudflow of water, ash and boulders that follows the valleys and picks up speed as it goes.
About 5,600 years ago a large part of the summit collapsed. The Osceola Mudflow reached what is now the Puget Sound lowland – exactly where towns like Orting and Puyallup stand today.
For a park visit, today's status means no restrictions at all. If you want to see what the hazard looks like in practice, drive through the Puyallup valley and watch for the siren towers and the evacuation route signs along the road.
4,392 m – and the mountain with the heaviest glacier load in the contiguous United States. The ice is why a small event at the summit can become a large flow in the valley.
That is how long ago the last magmatic eruption was, according to the USGS. The large flank collapse that produced the Osceola Mudflow was about 5,600 years ago.
Since 1995 Pierce County, the USGS and Washington's emergency management agency have been building an early warning system: sensors in the ground pick up the shaking of an advancing flow. Pierce County lists 42 siren towers in the Puyallup and Nisqually valleys, with announcements in English and Spanish.
In winter exactly one entrance stays open to cars: Nisqually in the southwest. Paradise is one of the snowiest regularly measured places on earth – and one of the few winter destinations in the Pacific Northwest you can simply drive to.
In that period every vehicle must carry chains – all-wheel drive included, sunshine included. Rental companies do not add them by default; ask, or buy a set beforehand.
The Longmire–Paradise stretch closes overnight and usually opens at 9 a.m. Uphill travel closes at 4 p.m. and downhill travel at 5 p.m.; the park advises leaving Paradise by 4:30 p.m. In avalanche conditions the road stays shut during the day too.
The Stevens Canyon Road, Chinook Pass, Cayuse Pass and the White River Road are closed to cars in winter. There is no gas station in the park – fill up in Ashford.

Without a car: There is no scheduled public transportation into the park. Commercial day tours run from Seattle and Tacoma. A rental car is the norm; there is no gas station inside the park.
By car: Nisqually entrance (southwest, year round) via SR 706 from Ashford. White River / Sunrise (northeast) via SR 410 from Enumclaw. Stevens Canyon (southeast) via US 12 and SR 123 from Packwood. Carbon River and Mowich Lake in the northwest: no access at present. Parking is free but tight on summer weekends, and traffic on the White River Road is metered at times.
For the subalpine meadows: late July to mid-August, when Paradise and Sunrise are in bloom and the high trails are clear of snow. For clear views and fall color: September into early October, when the parking lots ease off as well. For snow and empty trails: January to March at Paradise, with snowshoes and chains in the trunk. Worth avoiding if you want to see the mountain: the rainy stretch from November to May – Mount Rainier makes its own weather and can hide for days. Time of day: arrive before 10 a.m. or after 2:30 p.m., which is the park's own advice.

Yes, if you leave early. Two to two and a half hours out, the same back, and roughly four hours at Paradise in between – enough for the Skyline Trail or several short walks. Start at midday and the main thing you will see is the drive home in the dark.
In 2026 there is no way around Paradise. The Sunrise Road is closed to cars, and there is neither a visitor center nor drinking water up there. Paradise is reachable by car all year and has the densest choice of trails.
The entrance fee is $30 per vehicle and covers both of you for seven days. Add gas and food – there is no gas station in the park. A guided day tour from Seattle runs about €130 to €285 per person.
Worse than the photographs suggest. The mountain makes its own weather and is in cloud more often than clear. September and early October are statistically the clearest weeks; if you really want the summit, plan two attempts.
A lahar is a mudflow of water, ice, ash and rock that follows the valleys. It is the biggest hazard at Mount Rainier, but it concerns the populated valley floors rather than a park visit. The alert level is NORMAL, and Pierce County has run a siren system since 1995.
One day is enough for Paradise and one or two trails. To add the Stevens Canyon Road, Reflection Lakes and the Ohanapecosh area, allow two days and stay overnight in Ashford or Packwood.

Not in 2026. After the «Grand Park 2» fire in August the Sunrise Road is closed to vehicles from the junction with the White River Road; it is open to walkers and cyclists. The visitor center and day lodge are shut because of fire damage. Check the road status before you go.
