Pompeii from Rome

240 kilometers, two trains, one named ticket. Pompeii from Rome is a long day either way – the question is whether you want to plan it or buy it.

Two waysHow to get from Rome to Pompeii

There is no direct train. Every route goes through Naples: high-speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, then the Circumvesuviana suburban line from the lower level of the same station to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, 35 to 40 minutes, right at the Porta Marina entrance. Tours do the same distance by coach, which is slower but takes the changes out of your hands.

By train, on your own

Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale by Frecciarossa or Italo, then downstairs to Napoli Garibaldi for the Circumvesuviana toward Sorrento. Buy the Pompeii ticket beforehand at pompeii.vivaticket.it with the names of everyone in your party – since November 2024 tickets are personalized and there is a daily cap of 20,000. You set the pace, you can stay until closing, and you decide whether to add Herculaneum or Vesuvius. What you carry: three tickets, two changes, and the Circumvesuviana, which is cheap, crowded and not famous for comfort.

With a day tour

Pick-up in central Rome early in the morning, coach to Pompeii, two to three hours with a guide, the ticket handled for you, back in Rome in the evening. Twelve to thirteen hours door to door for the Amalfi Coast versions, about nine for Pompeii alone. €69 to €157 depending on whether lunch, Vesuvius or the coast are included – and on whether the operator uses the high-speed train instead of the coach.

From RomePompeii tours from Rome

The most booked ones combine Pompeii with something else, because the coach is going that way anyway: Vesuvius, Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast. That is a lot of Campania in one day – fine if you know you will be looking at Positano through a window.

The honest sumTrain or tour from Rome – which is better?

It comes down to two things: how much time you want in Pompeii, and how much you mind organizing three tickets.

Take the train if …

… you want more than three hours on site, want to be there at opening before the groups, or plan to add Herculaneum (20 minutes back toward Naples) or Vesuvius (bus 808 from Pompeii, 55 minutes). Book the high-speed train early for the low fares, and the Pompeii ticket with your names before you leave.

Take a tour if …

… you have one day, no appetite for the Circumvesuviana, and want a guide anyway. Or if the online sale for your date is gone: operators hold their own allocations and are often the last way in. Check that the tour includes the named ticket and ask how long you actually get inside.

Consider staying a night

Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum are three days' worth of a single rail line. From Rome as a day trip you get one of them, hurried. A night in Naples or Sorrento turns the same train fare into the Bay of Naples – all day plans from Naples.

Both are on the same Circumvesuviana line, from opposite ends: Naples 35 to 40 minutes, Sorrento about 30. From either, Pompeii is a half day, and the tours are correspondingly shorter and cheaper.

From Naples

From Sorrento

Circumvesuviana toward Naples to the same stop. Several tours simply take the train with you, two hours with an archaeologist included, from €38 – cheaper and quicker than a coach. Combined with Vesuvius from Sorrento it becomes a full day from €109.

How far is Pompeii from Rome?

About 240 kilometers (150 miles) by road. There is no direct train: high-speed train to Naples, roughly an hour, then the Circumvesuviana for 35 to 40 minutes to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri at the Porta Marina entrance.

Can you do Pompeii from Rome in a day?

Yes. On your own, leaving Rome early, you can be in Pompeii by late morning and have four to five hours on site before heading back. On a coach tour you get about three hours in Pompeii inside a nine- to thirteen-hour day.

Is a Pompeii tour from Rome worth it?

If you want a guide and no logistics, yes – the €69 tours are a fair deal for a coach, a guide and the ticket. If you want time in Pompeii, the train wins: more hours on site, at opening, for less money.

Do I need to book the Pompeii ticket in advance?

Strongly recommended. Since November 2024 there is a daily cap of 20,000 and every ticket carries the visitor's name; buy at pompeii.vivaticket.it with the names of your party. In summer the morning slot (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) has three times as many places as the afternoon. Tours include the ticket – check that they ask for your names.

Which Rome station and which Naples station?

Roma Termini for the high-speed trains. In Naples you arrive at Napoli Centrale; the Circumvesuviana leaves from Napoli Garibaldi, which is the lower level of the same station – follow the signs, no need to go outside.

Can I combine Pompeii with Vesuvius from Rome?

On a tour, yes – several include an optional Vesuvius stop. On your own it is tight but possible: bus 808 from Pompeii to the Vesuvius entrance takes 55 minutes, and the crater needs its own time-slot ticket booked ahead. How the order works.
