After a savanna fire, Mount Bromo was completely closed from 12 to 18 September 2026. According to Indonesian press reports, it has been open again since 19 September, 12:01 am, with a strict fire ban and possible restrictions in individual zones. The German Foreign Office still listed the national park as “closed until further notice” on 21 September. We give both, because we could not view the park authority's original notice. Check with your hotel or driver before you go.
Almost no travel site mentions the second point: the volcano authority PVMBG has Bromo at Level II (Waspada) and recommends staying out of the 1 km zone around the active crater. That officially puts the famous staircase to the crater rim inside the restricted area.
Penanjakan, Bukit Kedaluh (King Kong Hill) and Bukit Cinta – this is where the famous shot of Bromo, Batok and Semeru together comes from. Each point is its own “site” with a daily quota and has to be selected when you buy the ticket. Elevation of Penanjakan: about 2,770 m (9,088 ft).
Private cars have been banned from the Sea of Sand (Laut Pasir) since 2012; only jeeps from the local associations operate there. After the fire, a strict fire ban is in effect, and individual zones may be restricted.
The Tengger people's Hindu temple at the foot of the cone. The park authority's booking portal named it as the farthest point visitors may go: “maksimal Pura Luhur Poten.” That wording comes from an archived copy dated 3 August 2025 – the live portal itself was unreachable on 21 September 2026.
PVMBG warns of sudden steam explosions with no warning; in 2004, visitors died at the crater from flying rocks. On the ground, many people still climb up anyway. We could not determine whether the park authority enforces this. We do not recommend it.

Mount Bromo isn't a mountain you climb. It's a smoking cone in the middle of a caldera 10 km (6 miles) wide – and what gets people out of bed at midnight is the view down into it from above.
The jeeps set off around 3 to 3:30 am. At the viewpoint it's pitch dark and cold, in the single digits Celsius (upper 40s Fahrenheit); PVMBG measured a low of 9°C (48°F) on 20 September. You stand at the railing in a borrowed jacket and see nothing at first. Between 5:15 and 5:45 am the sun comes up, and the caldera fills with shapes: the ribbed cone of Batok up front, the flat, open crater of Bromo with its steam plume beside it, and Semeru far in the back. In the dry season, fog often sits over the caldera floor on clear mornings – nobody can guarantee it.
After that you head down into the Sea of Sand. Gray volcanic sand to the horizon, horses, jeep tracks, and the Pura Luhur Poten temple in the middle of it. If the wind turns, ash and a sulfur smell drift across the plain; a cloth over your mouth and nose isn't just an accessory here. The crater smokes above you – on 20 September the steam rose 50 to 400 meters (165 to 1,310 ft). You're back by late morning.
If you stay two nights in Cemoro Lawang, you can skip the jeep: it takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to walk up to Bukit Kedaluh in the dark, and at midday, once the jeeps have left, you can walk into the Sea of Sand. You still need a ticket either way.
From Malang or Surabaya, that means departure around midnight and return by noon. A tour solves two real problems here: the mandatory jeep and the ticket, which can only be bought with Indonesian payment methods. Whether the entrance fee and jeep are included in the price is stated in each tour's description – read it before you book.

There's no ticket counter at the gate. Anyone entering the caldera needs an online ticket bought in advance – for a fixed date and a specific viewpoint. The official portal was unreachable from here on 21 September 2026 (DNS error). We describe the process based on the park authority's fee notice, the archived copy of the portal, and press reports.
You book for the visit date, not the arrival day – and for a “site”: Penanjakan, Bukit Kedaluh, Bukit Cinta, Mentigen or Savana. The park authority recommends booking well ahead of your travel date. On weekends and Indonesian holidays, the sunrise sites sell out early.
Payment runs through a QRIS code or a virtual bank account. Foreign credit cards do not work, according to 2025/2026 travel reports; whether that has changed is unclear. In practice, the hotel, driver or tour operator buys the ticket. Have them show you the barcode – it gets scanned at the gate.
According to press reports on the reopening, tickets are neither rebooked nor refunded. Anyone caught in the park without a ticket pays five times the daily rate under the fee notice: 1,275,000 IDR, around €62. The “free back way in” some blogs mention is exactly that offense.
Under decree SK.88/21/BT.1/2012, only jeeps from the associations of Cemoro Lawang, Wonokitri and Jemplang operate in the Sea of Sand. Rental cars stay at the access point. The park authority does not publish jeep prices – check with your accommodation beforehand. On foot, it's about 45 minutes from Cemoro Lawang to the foot of the cone.

Without a car: Train or bus to Probolinggo, then a minibus (“Bison”) or taxi up to Cemoro Lawang. There is no practical public transport from Malang; jeep tours from your hotel via Tumpang and Jemplang are standard.
By car: Private cars may only drive as far as the access points of Cemoro Lawang, Wonokitri and Jemplang/Ngadas; the Sea of Sand is reached only by the association jeeps (SK.88/21/BT.1/2012).
Dry season, roughly May to October: clear mornings, the best chance of the fog sea in the caldera. The German Foreign Office lists November to March as the monsoon rainy season. Late in the dry season, though, fire risk rises – the savanna burned in both 2023 and September 2026, closing Bromo for days at a time. Pick a weekday; around Lebaran, Yadnya Kasada and New Year it's either packed or closed. On site, timing is everything: sunrise is around 5:15–5:45 am.
Kawah Ijen is six to seven hours further east, just short of the ferry to Bali. Combined tours are common because of that – the same tours also appear on our Ijen page. Important: Ijen has been closed since 4 September 2026 because of a wildfire, and no reopening was confirmed as of 21 September. The tours are still being sold regardless. Check the status first, then book – and only with free cancellation.

It's the simplest option if you're not staying overnight in Cemoro Lawang: midnight pickup, jeep, viewpoint, Sea of Sand, back by midday. The hard part is the hour, not the distance. Two nights in Cemoro Lawang is more relaxed.
Jeeps leave Cemoro Lawang around 3 to 3:30 am, and the sun rises between 5:15 and 5:45 am. From Malang or Surabaya, the tour starts around midnight.
Yes, that's the classic route through East Java: two to three days, often ending on Bali. It's six to seven hours' drive between the two. As of 21 September 2026, however, Ijen is closed because of a wildfire – check the status before you book.
Level II (Waspada) is the second of four levels. The level alone doesn't close anything; what matters is the radius in PVMBG's daily report. That currently stands at 1 km around the crater – the viewpoints and the Sea of Sand up to the temple lie outside it, the stairs and crater rim lie inside it.

The jeep tour with its short walks works with children too; the early hour and the cold are the hard parts. We found no official age limit. You should keep your distance from the cone itself anyway, because of the restricted zone.
