Five kinds of Etna tour, one variable none of them controls: the alert phase of the day. It decides how high any tour gets – and whether "summit" in the title means anything.

Access to Etna is not set by altitude but by the alert phase of the Sicilian civil protection, which follows the INGV early-warning system and can change several times a day. We fetch it every morning at six. In Attenzione everything is possible, including the summit craters with a registered guide. In Preallarme the crater zone is closed to everyone; cable car, 4x4 bus to about 3,000 m and all tours below run as normal. In Allarme everything above roughly 2,500 m is cleared.
Etna tours differ less in price than in where they end – and in what time of day they start. Sunset is the one thing worth planning the trip around.
Half a day, leaving mid-afternoon: lava fields from the last decades, a lava cave, then a viewpoint at around 2,000 m for sunset. When Etna is active, this is when the glow above the summit craters becomes visible. Usually without the cable car, usually €59 to €69. Runs in every phase but Allarme.
The Funivia's own product, also sold as a guided half day with a meeting point at Rifugio Sapienza: cable car to 2,500 m, Unimog bus to the highest point the civil protection allows – usually between 2,750 and 3,000 m – and a guide at the 2002 craters. Some tours list a low price because cable car and bus (€82 together) are paid in cash on the spot; read the fine print.
A full mountain day to the summit craters above 3,300 m: only with a guide registered in the Sicilian professional register, max. 10 guests per guide, 300 people a day, helmet, health declaration – and only in the Attenzione phase. In Preallarme these tours are rerouted to the 2002 craters or the 2,900 m zone. The title says summit; the phase decides.
Lava only glows once daylight fades, which is why the best-reviewed Etna tours leave in the afternoon. Pick-up in Catania, lava fields, a cave, a tasting, and the sun going down over Sicily with the summit above you. Whether it glows is up to the mountain.

The summit craters are always guide-only, and since July 2026 they have been closed to everyone for long stretches because the phase stood at Preallarme. Book these tours knowing that: in Attenzione you get the craters, otherwise a rerouted high-altitude trek. Only guides registered with the Collegio Regionale Guide Alpine e Vulcanologiche Sicilia may lead into the crater zone – ask to see the card.

Taormina is on the far side of the mountain from the Rifugio Sapienza road, so tours from there spend longer in the van and mostly stay around 2,000 m with a cave and a tasting. For the 3,000 m or the summit, tours from Catania or Nicolosi are the more direct choice.

The north and east slopes between 500 and 1,000 m are one of Italy's most talked-about wine regions – Nerello Mascalese on black soil, old vines, small cellars. Wine tours skip the summit entirely, which makes them the one Etna tour the alert phase cannot spoil.

For the daytime mountain, no. For sunset, almost certainly yes – unless you have a rental car and do not mind the drive down in the dark.
The AST bus leaves Catania at 8:15 a.m. (Piazza Giovanni XXIII, by the station) and returns from Rifugio Sapienza at 4:30 p.m., €6.60 return, one bus a day. Up there you choose: Silvestri craters on foot (€5), cable car to 2,500 m (€54) or the 3,000 m tour with bus and guide (€82). Buy the cable-car ticket at the base station, not online – tickets are not refunded for wind or a volcanic alert, and both are decided in the morning. With a car you can also stay for dusk at the Silvestri craters.
Sunset is the case for a tour: the last bus down leaves at 4:30 p.m., so without a car there is no other way to be on the mountain when it gets dark. Tours also solve the phase question for you – the guide knows in the morning where the day can go. What a tour cannot do: promise lava, or get you into the crater zone in Preallarme.

Half-day tours from Catania with pick-up cost €55 to €70, including sunset tours. Tours to 3,000 m with cable car and 4x4 are €38 to €88 – but check whether the €82 for cable car and bus is included or paid on the spot. Summit treks with a guide are €55 to €65, wine tours €61 to €179. The cable car alone is €54, the operator's own 3,000 m tour €82.
For most visitors the sunset tour from Catania: it is the only way to be on the mountain when the glow becomes visible without a rental car, and it runs in every phase except Allarme. If you want altitude, take the 3,000 m tour with cable car and 4x4. The summit trek is the best day on the mountain – when the phase allows it.
Only with a registered volcano guide and only in the Attenzione phase. In Preallarme, which has applied for long stretches since July 2026, the crater zone is closed to everyone; summit tours then end at the 2002 craters or around 2,900 m. The phase of the day is shown at the top of this page.
Nobody can promise it. When Etna is active and the sky is clear, the glow above the summit craters is often visible from the south slopes after sunset; flowing lava up close only if a flow reaches accessible ground, which the civil protection then fences off at 50 to 200 m. The volcano decides, not the operator.
From Catania if altitude or sunset matters: the Rifugio Sapienza road is on that side, transfers are shorter, and all 3,000 m and summit tours start there or in Nicolosi. From Taormina if you are staying there and want a comfortable half day with lava fields, a cave and a tasting at around 2,000 m.
Sturdy shoes, long trousers, a windproof jacket and a hat – even in August it is often below 10 °C and windy at 2,900 m. At the cable-car top station you can rent jackets and shoes. Tours provide helmets where they are required.
